Turning a stadium roof into a solar landmark

Go Media Stadium is now making history as the first major sports venue in New Zealand to power an event using solar energy. With over 1,600 panels installed across both grandstands, this iconic venue is setting a new benchmark for sustainable stadiums.

Project Snapshot

  • System size: 1,651 panels across East and West stands
  • Annual generation: Approximately 800,000 kWh
  • Estimated savings: Around $150,000 per year
  • Carbon reduction: 36 tonnes of CO₂ saved annually
  • Payback period: 6 to 8 years

The Challenge

Running a stadium takes a lot of energy. From lighting to operations and everything in between, power bills can climb fast. Auckland Stadiums were looking for a smarter, cleaner way to reduce their energy costs and environmental footprint.

The Solution

We installed a large-scale solar system across both the East and West stands. It was designed to meet around 60% of the stadium’s annual electricity needs. All of this was delivered while working around a busy schedule of games, concerts, and events.

This is now one of the largest rooftop solar installs in the country.

The Impact

In July 2025, the Warriors vs Titans match became the first major sporting event in Aotearoa to be powered primarily by solar. The energy that lit up the stadium came directly from the panels above the fans.

The impact includes:

  • More than $100,000 in annual energy savings
  • Significant carbon reduction every year – 36 tonnes of CO₂ saved annually
  • A blueprint for other large venues to follow

“We expect to save more than $100,000 annually through solar energy and have the panels pay for themselves in under a decade.”

Why It Matters

This project shows what’s possible when venues take the lead. Go Media Stadium proves that even high-energy spaces can reduce costs, lower emissions, and make solar part of the everyday.

It’s more than just clean energy. It’s a smart investment in the future of events, infrastructure, and community impact.

Let’s Talk

If you’re ready to boost your building’s performance and reduce long-term energy costs, now’s the smartest time to invest.
